Quit the excuses and jump already!
We can all think of excuses for not wanting to do something. Sometimes I fake sleep so I don’t have to change the baby’s diaper. But, then so does my wife and it’s a smelly, waiting game.
Currently, I have two good friends who are playing the same game. They have great ideas and yet they have a plethora of excuses as to why they can’t start a startup NOW.
Here are a few of their excuses (and others I hear frequently) :
I need more experience. Experience comes with doing. You can read every article, book, manual in the world, and you will never gain as much knowledge as actually doing it. Tennis was my first startup. I started playing when I was 12 and I was teaching (and making money) in Maine in my early twenties. I never read a book or manual on tennis. I played everyday and I continually practiced new techniques. I didn’t waste time on excuses.
My idea isn’t good enough yet. Some of the greatest ideas were born through trial and error. Your idea may not be completely formed, but odds are you will never end up being successful with your first idea anyway. You will cut, dive and pivot before you end up with a solid business. Youtube started as a dating site. Facebook was originally called FaceMash, a Hot or Not for Harvard students. Twitter was twttr , an SMS shortcode system used by Odeo employees. Just having an idea is good enough to start.
It’s too risky. Start your startup now, before it’s too late. No time is riskier than tomorrow. Today is the day. The Great Depression was a horrible time in history, but if several people had waited on their ideas we wouldn’t have things like…CAR RADIOS…COPY MACHINES….LAUNDRY MATS….TAMPONS….and my all time favorite, CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES. Today is YOUR day.
I have a family, kids, responsibilities. Did you know that at the start of 2011, the average entrepreneur was over 30 years of age and married? How much time have you wasted dreaming about JUMPING into the fire and DOING what you LOVE? Having responsibilities only means you have more drive and reasons to succeed!
I don’t have enough money saved. No time in history has it been so incredibly easy to start a business than now. I once heard a story about a lady with a bicycle, a library card, and a glowing personality. She started an online business without owning a computer. Within a year, she was shipping products all over the world from her office of 15 employees. Determination beats out money any day of the week. There are probably close to fifty things you own now that you could use to start a business. Screwdriver? Laptop? Cellphone?
Do yourself a favor and listen to your heart, head, and gut. Don’t listen to anyone that says you’ll never succeed. You might not your first time out. But that’s how Bill Gates became the second richest man in the world.

August 21, 2011My wife and I started our sustainability advisory company as an adventure. It all started with a personal challenge, we knew the world was on the brink of an environmental collapse and yet corporations didn’t seem to accept it. We passionately believed it was time to challenge the conventional business model by shifting corporations into running environmentally and socially responsible operations.
In 2008, we were awarded the amazing opportunity of becoming the certified partners of the Global Reporting Initiative, the premier global standard for sustainability reporting. This was a pivotal piece for us since it allowed us to not only spread the word about sustainability but also equip over 300 professionals from top US corporations with the tools they needed to fully assess the sustainability of their organizations’ activities and start reducing the negative impacts from day-to day operations.
Although a small organization, we at ISOS Group, believe that if we can persuade corporations to continue operating within the context of corporate responsibility, everybody will eventually understand that sustainable operations are good business and organizations have responsibilities well beyond the bottom line.
Cade Collister has been part of the ISOS team from the beginning, his amazing creativity and design skills being critical in helping us build our brand and communicate our business philosophy.

August 21, 2011I’d add to this great list, simple laziness. Introspection is at the heart of personal growth, but we all know that sometimes, if we’re lucky, our only barrier to entry is the relative gravity of our own asses. I’ve worked through about 70%, then no more, of so many would-be software products, I couldn’t possibly recall them all. Believe it or not, the laptop was originally designed with portability in mind, so if you’re not getting anything done wherever you are, then portabilize your butt somewhere else.
And, yeah, I made up a word there.
